Book Cover Design | Motion Media
Software: Adobe Illustrator | Photoshop | After Effects
Reimagined the book cover of A Game of Thrones, integrating both static and animated elements to enhance visual storytelling and effectively communicate thematic elements in the story through various mediums. The central focus of the cover centers on the dragon’s eye, showing the reflection of a harsh winter scene and symbolizing the looming presence of danger. Eyes are also a recurring symbolic theme throughout the series, representing themes of perception, identity, and transformation. For the animated book cover, subtle cracking ice and howling wind sounds adds to the eerie silence of the winter beyond the wall in A Game of Thrones.

Challenge
Book covers must capture the essence of a story while remaining visually compelling in both physical and digital formats. The challenge was to reinterpret A Game of Thrones through a contemporary cover design that distilled the novel's atmosphere, symbolism, and emotional tension into a single, memorable visual—then extend that concept into motion without compromising its clarity or impact.
Approach
The concept centers on the dragon's eye as both a visual focal point and symbolic device, using the reflection of a harsh winter landscape to foreshadow the looming threat beyond the wall. Inspired by recurring themes of perception, identity, and transformation throughout the narrative, the composition relies on restrained imagery, dramatic contrast, and atmospheric color to create intrigue while avoiding literal interpretation.
The design was then adapted into an animated book cover, where subtle motion—including cracking ice, drifting snowfall, and ambient wind—enhances the mood without distracting from the core composition. The animation serves as a natural extension of the static design, reinforcing the story's quiet tension through movement and sound.
Outcome
The result is a cohesive visual identity that demonstrates how editorial design can evolve across both print and digital media. By pairing symbolic imagery with restrained animation, the project transforms a traditional book cover into an immersive storytelling experience while preserving the clarity, atmosphere, and emotional weight of the original concept.
