This typographic book project explores a curated collection of fairytales from around the world. Inspired by the layered meanings these stories hold for childhood and adulthood, the design uses typography as an expressive storytelling tool. Through shifts in scale, rhythm, and composition, the type mirrors the emotional arc of each tale, creating an immersive reading experience and invites the readers to slow down, explore, and rediscover familiar stories in new ways.
Challenge
Editorial design extends beyond organizing content – it shapes how readers experience a narrative. The challenge was to create a typographic system that transformed a collection of familiar fairy tales into an immersive reading experience, allowing typography to communicate emotion, pacing, and atmosphere alongside the written word.
Approach
The design centers on expressive typography as the primary storytelling device. Variations in scale, rhythm, hierarchy, and composition were used to reflect the emotional arc of each story, creating moments of tension, quiet, wonder, and discovery throughout the book. A restrained visual language allows the typography to take focus while establishing a cohesive editorial system that balances readability with expression.
By treating each spread as part of a larger narrative journey, the book encourages readers to engage more intentionally with stories they may already know, revealing new layers of meaning through design.
Outcome
The result is an editorial publication that demonstrates the expressive potential of typography beyond conventional page layout. Through thoughtful pacing and visual storytelling, Tales of Tide, Frost & Forest reimagines classic fairy tales as a contemporary reading experience – one that invites readers to slow down, reflect, and rediscover the emotional depth within familiar narratives.
